News from Jump! Theatre for 2011

We’ve had a very busy year behind the scenes here at Jump! – plenty of updates on our activities below!

First, congratulations to Nena St. Louis and Gaetana Caldwell-Smith on the publication of Nena’s play “Do You Want To Buy My Brain?” and Gaetana’s “Peas Porridge.” These plays are two of the first works presented by Jump! in our Springboard series of New Works, and the chapbook is avialable for $8 by emailing

jumptheatre@gmail.com

Next up, Jump! is delighted to announce a reading of The Dream in Which I’m Dying, by Nicholas C. Pappas, on Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at The Marsh Theatre in San Francisco. Directed by Rebecca Longworth , Nick’s play is an exploration of one soldier’s experience in Iraq and the moral questions he must confront upon his return. The play premiered at SF State’s Greenhouse series last spring, and we are thrilled to be in a partnership with Nick around developing his play.

As for production news, we are also delighted to announce the upcoming production of Hunter’s Point by Elizabeth Gjelten in June 2011 at St. Boniface Theater in San Francisco’s Tenderloin district. Those of you who supported the reading in March 2010 will be especially gratified to learn that this play will now have a 3 week run in June. Directed by Christine Young, Hunter’s Point is a play about bicycles, the fierce love between sisters and “moral treatment” of mental illness. Stay tuned to our website for further news and dates.

Thanks to all our supporters who have been waiting for news of our activities and who have been hanging in with us for the past few years. 2011 will NOT disappoint!

Jessica Holt (Three Wise Monkeys) is directing the play for Threshold;theatre on the verge, a new Berkeley-based theatre company that she says “was founded on the shared belief that theatremaking is alive with risk, alive with language, metaphor, material bodies, and emotional expression.”

It’s old news by now, but we wanted to let you know that Jump! was awarded a 2009 Theatre CA$H Grant from Theatre Bay Area. We’re honored! We’ll be using this grant to produce Liz Gjelten’s new play, Hunter’s Point, a play about fierce love and bicycles that asks: What is ‘moral treatment’ of the homeless mentally ill, and what prevents our society from providing it? True to Jump!’s aesthetic, the play will layer music and video projections to create a multi-media theatre experience that’s deeply rooted in our hometown of San Francisco.

What better way to celebrate than to gather together and drink a toast at a local watering hole? Here’s the crowd:

From the left (standing), that’s Gaetana, Roberta, Bob (Roberta’s husband), Rebecca, Justin (Rebecca’s husband), Nena and Mike. Seated are Paoli (holding Lulu) and Liz — the playwright and guest of honor!

We’re looking forward to a reading of the current Hunter’s Point script on April 25, 2010 as part of Springboard V.

We had our first all-company production meeting last week and hammered out a lot of details. Mike Lewis our tech director figured out an awesome way to build doors in the space which will amaze you!

We also figured out rehearsal schedules, finished casting and made sure we could fit enough chairs in the Meridian space to fit everyone who wants to attend.

The directors had paid a visit to the space earlier in the week and it’s just as beautiful as we remembered.

Keep an eye out on this space for more details as they happen. And mark your calendars for April 23, 24 and 25 when Springboard V will be upon us.
